I have a confession....
I love stuff.
Stuff is good if you use it or need it but I have stuff in case I need it or because I might use it. I have come to the conclusion this is not a good enough reason to accumulate stuff.
Yes stuff is good... Too much stuff is bad, when it gets to the epic proportions that make you reconsider your priorities when you are done watching hoarders or other shows that let you look into the homes of those people who have allowed their stuff to take over every aspect of their lives. This is when I purge. Bag it up!!
Then I have bags of stuff to go away from my home... But I look now at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the real world and what do I see?
Bags of stuff, a stack or two of stuff and oh yes a box of stuff... These items all have a home hopefully not my home I just have to trek them out to the car where hopefully they won't take up residence.
Today is sunny and happy, fresh air coming in the windows and the smell of fresh cut grass lingering on the breeze. Perfect day to get rid of the clutter!
I of course will get rid of bags of contents and then look around like my place should reflect Danish modern interiors only to find surfaces and nooks and crannies that have been overlooked...
Sigh something about spring time makes you crank up the tunes and revisit the "keep-give away-toss" bins and get the job done!!
So coming to a thrift store near you a few (ok maybe lots) bags of great stuff .... Don't judge... Just enjoy

"Clean Eating" vs. the rest of the food out there...how does one eat well when nothing is good anymore?!
Trendy food.... ugh don't get me started on trendy food.
clean eating, eating in the zone, restarting your metabolism, jump starting your diet, eating for your blood type, eating for what color you are, all veggies, no veggie all beans, beans are evil, no carbs, yes carbs, all meat, no meat, organic, non organic... blah blah blah...
If you like it, if its good for you go for it!
I was in the library the other day and there was this gathering of people around the cart of books waiting to be shelved. There must have been 10 book all about clean eating on the cart. These people were pawing through them like they were $10 jeans on boxing day at the Gap! One of the mentioned that Dr.Oz said this is the way to maximize how you eat... honestly if you know me you know how much trouble I have when one person has so much influence over many. Now I am not anti government or anything like that so maybe I should rephrase that. I have trouble when one person with celebrity status has much influence over those who watch them on tv. A good example of that is the good Dr.Oz. He does good work, true he is introducing a whole population of day time tv watchers to a whole world of healthy choices that they may not have thought of prior to watching him. But the one and only time I attempted to watch him was at work and it was on in the staff room and he was telling everyone to look at their poop. really? no.thank.you.
I like the idea of eating healthy and making good food choices, life is hard enough when you have people looking judgementally in your shopping basket yes I confess i buy bags of salad probably chopped by little children after they walked 20 miles through the fields they have been working in for hours in the blazing sun to bring me the little bag of spring mix with herbs. For this I thank you little gardener elves. I am a nurse I need convenience. I have been known to bring a bag of salad to work and a bottle of dressing, cut the top off pour the dressing in, hold the top shake it up and eat it right out of the bag for lack of time to find dishes make sure they are clean assemble said salad dress salad sit and eat salad... and yes my mother did raise me better than this. 10 points for effort right?! its a salad with low fat dressing!
If you were to look through my cupboards well for one you are brave, they are scary, and two you would think I was the healthiest person ever. Among the depths of the unknown there are bags of Quinoa, hemp hearts, flax seeds, ground flax, golden flax, honey, agave syrup, coconut oil, coconut flour, coconut sugar, basmati rice, long grain rice, brown rice, wild rice, black rice, organic rice....yes I am the ultimate consumer. I just need someone to tell me this is what you need to make for dinner, this is how you do it, or better yet here I made you dinner! After working 12 hours you don't want to cook, let alone make a lunch for the next day. * let me take a minute to tell you what it means to make a lunch for a 12 hour shift as a nurse.
You need coffee, tea, something you can eat on the way to work, a breakfasty type food that can be eaten quickly or on the go, a fruit type snack for a burst of energy if you happen to get a morning break, something substantial for lunch in case you don't get a dinner break, another snack type food for the afternoon, something for dinner because you rarely want to make a dinner when you get home close to 8pm so your work bag is usually full of granola bars or protein bars tea bags, k-cups for the coffee maker and a shriveled orange or two. As you can see it is a tough career to make healthy choices with!
Lets just say its bad when you are walking out of your patients room and the tray of food that is in front of them is better than what you managed to throw together for your lunch that day! The odd times I have been able to make a batch of something that is good, good for you, has the appropriate compliment of protein to stick with you and veggie content to me labeled good for me I feel the best. I have been successful at a veggie lasagna before, want to know the secret? It has meat in it. No noodles! It uses zucchini sliced very thin instead of the noodles. It is good... it is yummy... it is a stinkin huge recipe. A monster pan of lasagna for one person makes for a weeks worth of lasagna. I have to confess I have had it for breakfast on the way to bed some mornings after nights. Best.sleep.ever.
Hats off to those who manage to stick to a "clean diet" or are able to maintain a life of balance. As for me I am attempting to finish a bag of quinoa and the veggies in my fridge before they get soggy. life is all about balance, i hope you are able to find yours. I, on the other hand am still on that journey..... hope they have a good diner along the way!

canadian broad abraod...
So I have traveled many times across the boarder into the land of taco bell.... but this time it struck me as funny how different Canadians are from Americans.
For example I was walking through the airport and this big business man comes bustling up behind be dragging a large wheely bag, with a briefcase attached to it sticking out in such an angle as to bite the ankles of anyone standing within 4 feet of the guy. So as he drags the pile of luggage past, elbowing me in the arm causing my Starbucks to leap out the top of my cup burning my hand and the brief case thing hitting me in the Achilles sending pain up my leg.... what do I do?
I apologize to the big oaf!
yes I'm sorry I was walking along minding my own business
I'm sorry I was actually on time for my flight with the appropriate amount and size of carry on luggage
I'm sorry I was early enough to be walking at a casual pace from the Starbucks on my way to pick out an airplane book.
Yes I'm sorry you don't have manners! Seriously some peoples kids!
I love the average Americans love for food!
Yes there is a fair amount of veggie loving leather shunning smoothie guzzling residents but there are also the kitchen chemists who come up with creations like the "phatty" burger... yep its a bacon cheeseburger nestled between two grilled cheese sandwiches (I am definitely trying it next time) if you are just a little bit curious about the rest of the menu you can find it at http://burgeraptos.com if you find yourself in Santa Cruz California or in sweet little Aptos California I highly recommend swinging by if not for the awesome ambiance but for the delicious burgers (beef, salmon, turkey, chicken, pork belly and yes even veggie) and sweet potato fries, tator tots or classic fries all served in a paper-lined bread pan! Yes quirky and wonderful.
I was trying to think of anywhere in my town that has something like that to offer and honestly I can't think of a single place...
Maybe that is my mission for this Canadian broad... to be a tourist in my own town...
